Joe Root out, Rob Key in.
England has made a couple of moves today. Joe Root has stood down as captain, which considering everything that just happened in English cricket seems either too late, or completely pointless.
In many ways, the narrative won. Many years ago an English writer said that most English cricket writing is just putting pressure on the person who is next to lose their job. There is little actual cricket writing, analysis, or context, just Root out.
And the narrative was almost universal that Root had to go. The groupthink had settled in, and even those who didn't think a captaincy change would much, thought Root should go.
I think Root stepping down can hurt England, because of the mental strain put on Ben Stokes. Not to mention that you would assume for an allrounder, he should be coming to a point where his body can't be as incredible.
